I’ve just released my new video course Deep Dive into Match Look and AI Masking, and today I’ve prepared a free lesson from that course on eye enhancement using AI masks! You’ll see how to set visual accent on eyes, how to quickly change iris color, and how to make red veins in eyes less noticeable.
If you enjoyed these techniques, I guarantee you’ll have fun and learn new tricks when you watch the full course!
In the full course, you’ll learn best practices for Match Look and AI Masking, discover new batch editing techniques, and see how to use Match Look and AI Masks in styles. We’ll also uncover hidden features of these tools, such as using AI-generated images for Match Look and combining AI Masks with Luma Range. Plus, you’ll get 15 free styles with the course to make your AI masking and match look workflow even more effective.
Enhancing Eyes with AI Masks in Capture One
Important: make sure you have the latest Capture One 16.5.3 update installed, as it brings separate AI masks for whites and iris with pupil.
First, here is my recipe for general eye enhancement:
I prefer to use a mix of Contrast, with fairly strong HRD adjustments, and a noticeable Clarity adjustment. This gives a much more natural look than just increasing Clarity alone.
In the lesson materials you’ll find three styles to enhance eyes as well as 12 additional free styles that comes with the lesson.
You can always reduce the opacity if you feel these settings are too strong.
And as with any AI mask, you can copy it to a new image and it’ll adapt to it!
Changing Eye Color in Capture One
Second, you can easily change the iris color by selecting the full color wheel in the Skin Tone Color Editor, setting Hue Uniformity to 100, and simply dragging the sample spot to your target color.
Again, you can easily copy these adjustments to a new image!
If you need a more pronounced color change, you can accompany the Color Editor with Color Balance or even White Balance correction. But now we have also changed the color of the lights. And as we discussed earlier, we can easily remove such area with Luma Range. Best of all, Luma Range adapts to your images, so you can easily copy it with your AI mask.
Making Red Veins Less Noticeable
Finally, you can use AI masks to make red veins in the eyes less noticeable.
First, you need to create a sclera mask to select the whites of the eyes. Usually this works quite well, but sometimes you may need to manually remove the AI mask from surrounding areas.
Now click on the red vein in the color editor to find it’s color on a color wheel. BTW, they are usually not quite red! Now you need to find a balanced mix of desaturation and lightness to make the red viens less noticeable.
